How often should I update my headshot?

Using an old headshot says you are not staying current. Be sure to stay on top of things. How often you should update your headshot depends on a few factors.

For business headshots, 2-3 years is a good time to wait before thinking about updating your headshots. Refreshing your image occasionally sends the message that you pay attention to details and are willing to invest in yourself.

However, there are a few other factors that might require an update sooner than that. Here are the circumstances that may call for an early update or a different strategy:

1. Changed Appearance

Since headshot should represent what you look like, then it’s a good idea to get a new one after you’ve changed your appearance. Did you go from long hair to a pixie cut? Shave off your beard? Hit the gym hard and upped your fitness level a few notches? Or maybe you just acquired a cool new scar.

Achieving a goal or making a major change can be a big confidence booster as well, and updating your image reinforces that. Embrace your change and show the world the new you.

2. Active on Social Media

If you have an audience on social media, then it’s a good idea to update more frequently. Refreshing your headshot sends the message you are staying up to date and not resting on your laurels.

I recommend a new set of images at least once a year, and make sure you get images with a few different styles and moods. Then you’ll have options to choose from throughout the year that all have the same “look and feel.” Here are some pictures from a recent session that have variety and still work together to strengthen her brand:

3. Promotion

Did you recently get a promotion or switch roles? If so, congratulations! Now, take a minute and review the headshot you are using and see if it reflects your new status. Chances are your current image doesn’t reflect your new confidence and position. If that’s the case, then now is a great time to create a new headshot to let everyone know you’ve reached a new milestone.
